tear sac, infection of

Sometimes, the tear sac - a tiny enlargement of the tear duct that lies in the crease between the face and nose, just below the corner of the eye - gets infected - this is called dacryocystitis. The area overlying the tear sac becomes red, swollen, and perhaps a little tender. Pus drains from the tear duct into the eye. An oral antibiotic as well as massage and ointment or drops may be prescribed. Sudden swelling and redness in the area of the tear sac should be reported to your baby's doctor right away.
