Sutton's Law

The notorious bank robber Willy Sutton was once asked (so the story goes) why he continued to rob banks (he was caught more than once). "Because that is where the money is," was his alleged reply. Sutton's Law - "Go where the money is" - tells doctors to consider the most likely conditions that the patient might have and do those tests first that have the highest liklihood of making the diagnosis the quickest and at the least expense.

This is therefore not an admonition to aspiring pediatricians to drop out to enter a dermatology residency.
