priapism

Priapism is a prolonged painful erection that is not related to sexual activity. In children, it is essentially limited to patients with sickle-cell disease, but occurs rarely in children with other conditions such as advanced malignancies or blood clotting disorders. It is a urologic emergency, because if the blood in the penis clots extensively, the resultant scar tissue formation will permanently render the organ useless for procreation.
