mutation

A mutation is a change in the genetic code of an individual which alters the genetic programming of the body cells. Mutation can thus give rise to new features in the affected individual (unfortunately, usually bad) that would not have ordinarily come from either parent. For example, about 25% of new cases of hereditary spherocytosis are thought to be new mutations.
