metabolic syndrome

The so-called "metabolic syndrome" is a constellation of physical and laboratory findings. It officially consists of the finding of any three of these markers

  • abdominal obesity
  • dyslipidemia (either high-triglycerides, low-high-density lipoproteins, or both)
  • insulin resistance (fasting blood glucose >100)
  • elevated blood pressure
A commonly observed external marker for this syndrome in children and adolescents is acanthosis nigricans, which is a marker for insulin resistance, high blood insulin levels (hyperinsulinemia), and eventually type 2 diabetes.
