meatal stenosis

One of the occasional complications of circumcision is that the business end of the penis - the urethral opening or "meatus" - rubs against the paper diaper and becomes irritated and inflamed - meatitis. Healing of this chronic trauma to the urethral meatus can cause the formation of scar tissue which creates a stricture, or narrowing of the opening.

Symptoms of this condition are

  • pain on urination (dysuria)
  • frequency, meaning running to the bathroom abnormally often
  • a fine, pinpoint urinary stream, perhaps deviated (misses the toilet)
  • a visibly small urinary opening

Treatment is simplicity itself nowadays and is done in the urologists office. The stricture is opened with the aid of topical anesthetic EMLA cream.
