ketogenic diet

The ketogenic diet is a non-drug therapy for seizure control in children for whom drug therapy is inadequate to control their epilepsy. It is a rigorous diet in which most calories are supplied by fat, and protein and carbohydrate are severely restricted. It requires careful measurement of all food prepared, and may be unacceptably time consuming for some families. However, recent research1 has shown it to be generally very effective. It is not without some risk, mainly mild reduction in growth rate, blood lipid abnormalities and kidney stones, but these side effects can be monitored and reduced.
