handwashing

Of all the things you can do to avoid illness in yourself or your children, simple handwashing is the most effective. I wash my hands before touching any patient and afterwards if they are infectious. That's why I have never contracted conjunctivitis, for example, in 20 years of pediatrics. Any time you change a diaper, or handle your or anyone else's child who is ill, wash your hands. You'll be glad you did.
