gland

A gland is an organ that secretes a chemical substance called a hormone into the bloodstream that controls the operation of another organ or organs somewhere else in the body. The thyroid gland secretes a hormone that controls the general level of metabolism. Compare that to the pituitary gland that secretes a number of hormones that control how certain glands secrete their hormones in turn. The only glands you can feel on the body are the thyroid, palpable in anyone's neck, and the testicles of males, that have a glandular function to secrete the hormone testosterone.
