enzyme

An enzyme is a protein molecule which acts as a catalyst to very specifically speed up a chemical reaction in the body. There are thousands of different enzymes in human cells. Each enzyme is the product of a specific gene; the production of enzymes (and other body proteins) is how the genetic information of the genes get translated into all the myriad characterics of the human body.
