An encephalopathy would refer to any process adversely affecting the brain in a diffuse, systemic way, rather than as a focal process. In general, encephalopathy refers to metabolic malfunction, rather than a structual injury. For example, Reye syndrome causes diffuse metabolic malfunction of the brain.
