dermoid cyst

A dermoid cyst is a type of benign tumor (not, repeat not, cancerous). In children, these are most commonly found on the face at the lateral border of the upper orbital ridge (at the outer margin of the eyebrow). Dermoid cysts may contain a jumble of glandular tissue, hair follicles, hair shafts, fatty and connective tissues. They are usually surgically removed by an ophthamologist for cosmetic reasons. If your child is suspected to have a dermoid cyst, depending upon the location of the cyst, a CT scan may be done to rule out any extension of the mass through the skull.
