An autoimmune disease in one in which the immune system for whatever reason forms immunity against its own host cells. A classic example of of this would be idiopathic thrombocytic purpura (ITP), in which antibodies to platelets cause rapid destruction of the necessary clotting cells with resultant bruising and possibly more serious internal bleeding.
